I photograph families with softness, with joy, and with space to just be. No forced smiles. No perfect poses. Just the golden, fleeting magic of your real life.
Hi there!
The endless scrolling through Pinterest for newborn photo inspiration, the anxiety about how your baby will behave during the session, the questions about what to wear and what to bring… If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone! As The Woodlands newborn photographer, I’ve helped hundreds of new parents navigate their first professional newborn session with their tiny new addition.
Last week, as I was setting up for a newborn session, a tired mom walked through the door looking a bit frazzled. “We’ve been up all night, he had a blowout, and I’m pretty sure I have spit-up somewhere on this shirt,” she confessed with a weary smile. Two hours later, that same mom was peacefully watching her baby sleep we captured the most beautiful, serene moments. The magic of a newborn session isn’t just in the photos—it’s in the entire experience, and today I’m pulling back the curtain to show you exactly what goes into creating those gentle, meaningful moments.
You know, I didn’t always feel this passionate about newborn photography. I actually fell in love with newborn sessions when I photographed my sister and her family in their home for the first time. There was something so beautiful about how naturally the session flowed in their own space. Before that, I honestly felt uninspired about newborn sessions because I didn’t want to be the photographer with all the crazy props and forced poses. I wanted families to just be themselves in their space, with the natural flow of their newborn’s rhythm.
When I arrive at The Woodlands home for your lifestyle newborn session, I’ve already done quite a bit of behind-the-scenes work to ensure everything flows smoothly. About an hour before I arrive, I’m already thinking about your session—checking the weather for natural light conditions and making sure I have everything packed and ready.
The first thing I do when I walk into your home is scout for the most beautiful natural light. Usually, this means finding those lovely big windows that The Woodlands homes are known for. I’m looking for soft, evenlight that will make both you and your baby look naturally radiant. Sometimes this means we’ll work in your bedroom if it has the best light, or maybe we’ll set up in your living room near those gorgeous floor-to-ceiling windows.
I bring a few simple items to help create the perfect environment—soft blankets, a few neutral props that complement your home’s style. I also make sure to ask you ahead of time which rooms you’d prefer to use and if there are any special spots in your home that are meaningful to your family.
The beauty of lifestyle newborn sessions is that we’re working with what you already have. I might simply move a chair closer to a window, clear off a bed to create a clean backdrop, or suggest we use that beautiful nursery you’ve lovingly prepared. It’s about enhancing the natural beauty of your space, not transforming it into something it’s not.
Here’s where my experience as a mom of three boys really comes in handy. I’ve learned so much from my own children about what helps keep babies calm and content during sessions. One of my biggest secrets? The pacifier.
I learned this lesson with my own son during his newborn session. I used a pacifier throughout his early weeks, and it was such a lifesaver for keeping him calm during his photos. But with my youngest, I forgot to bring his pacifier to the session, and I could immediately tell he was having a harder time settling. He just wanted to snuggle on me and sleep, and the only way to soothe him was by nursing him to sleep since we’d left his pacifier at home.
Even if you don’t plan on using a pacifier long-term with your newborn, I always suggest having one available during our session. It can make such a difference in those moments when baby needs just a little extra comfort.
The key to a successful newborn session is working with your baby’s natural rhythm. I always recommend scheduling sessions when your little one is typically well-rested and fed. Usually, this means planning our session for mid-morning after their first big feeding of the day, or early afternoon after a good nap.
During our session, I’m not rushing through poses or trying to force your baby into unnatural positions. Instead, I’m watching for those beautiful, fleeting moments—the way their tiny fingers curl around yours, how peaceful they look sleeping in daddy’s arms, or that sweet expression they make when they’re dreaming. These are the moments that happen naturally when we create a calm, comfortable environment.
Let’s be real for a moment—newborn sessions come with their fair share of surprises! Between diaper blowouts, hungry cries, and babies who decide they’d rather be awake and alert instead of sleepy and posed, things don’t always go according to plan. And you know what? That’s perfectly okay.
Some of the most beautiful images I’ve captured have come from those “unplanned” moments. The photo of mom comforting a fussy baby often becomes the family’s favorite because it captures the real love and tenderness of those early days. The image of dad lovingly starring into baby’s eyes to get baby’s attention usually shows the most genuine smile and connection.
I’ve learned to embrace these moments rather than stress about them. When baby needs to eat, we take a feeding break. When they need a diaper change, we pause and take care of that. When they’re just not settling, sometimes the most beautiful photo is of them wide awake, looking around with those curious newborn eyes.
As a mom myself, I know how exhausting those first few weeks can be. You’re running on little sleep, trying to figure out your baby’s patterns, and possibly dealing with day and night confusion. I never want you to feel stressed during our session. My job is to work around your baby’s needs and capture beautiful moments, regardless of whether they happen exactly as we planned.
After our session together, I head home to begin the careful process of selecting and editing your images. This is where the magic really happens—taking those beautiful moments we captured and enhancing them to create images you’ll treasure forever.
I typically spend several hours going through all the images from your session, selecting the very best moments that showcase your family’s love and your baby’s precious details. I’m looking for the images where everyone looks their best, where the light is most flattering, and where the emotion is most genuine.
My editing style is gentle and timeless—I want your images to feel like they could have been taken yesterday or twenty years from now. I enhance the natural beauty that was already there, softening skin tones, adjusting lighting, and making sure the colors complement the peaceful feeling of your session.
You’ll typically receive your online gallery within two weeks of our session, and Houston families most often choose to create beautiful albums or wall art collections to display these precious memories. There’s something so special about having physical prints of these fleeting moments that you can hold in your hands and pass down to your children.
As I mentioned earlier, it’s so easy to forget these precious milestones with our newborns. From day zero to month four, babies look different, behave differently, and reach new developmental milestones seemingly overnight. As moms, I think it’s so important that we capture these moments, even when—especially when—we’re in the thick of it.
I know that during those early weeks, when you’re running on little sleep and trying to figure out your new normal, it can be hard to appreciate these little moments. You might be dealing with a baby who has their days and nights flipped, or you’re simply overwhelmed by the beautiful chaos of new parenthood. But these are exactly the moments that matter most.
When I photograph your family during this precious newborn phase, I’m not just taking pictures—I’m preserving a chapter of your family’s story that you’ll want to remember forever. Twenty years from now, when your baby is grown, these images will remind you of how tiny their fingers were, how perfectly they fit in your arms, and how much love filled your home during those early days.
Whether we’re working in the comfort of your Houston home, capturing the natural flow of your family’s life, or creating those peaceful posed moments that showcase your baby’s delicate features, every image is created with the understanding that this time is fleeting and precious.
If you’re expecting a baby and wondering about newborn photography, I’d love to chat with you about creating these beautiful memories for your family. Feel free to reach out with any questions about the process—I’m here to make this experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible for your growing family.
