Little Black Dress

The little black dress is an essential for every woman’s closet. I love a quality, little black dress because it’s easy to throw on and not think about matching pieces.

If you’re looking to get portraits done for your business, this is one to bring to your portraits session. You can try from very casual to professional looks. This will all depend on your brand.

Here’s a few styles I love for portrait sessions.

  1. A black maxi dress
  2. A black a-line
  3. A black empire waist
  4. A black flowy midi
  5. A black blouson-bodice
  6. A black wrap dress

A long maxi dress is beautiful, especially if they are flowy. If you are conscious of your shoulders, get thick straps to keep your shoulders covered. This also makes the photos look more professional if you are using these for brand photos.

I talk about how much I love wrap dress here. If you must buy one dress, get the wrap dress. The silhouette looks great on both petite and curvy women. For curvy women, you will notice it does wonders at bringing out your curves. You’ll never have to worry about this dress going out of style.

Other styles I love that bring out curves, are the a-line style. With this style, you can move comfortably through your shoot.

If you are looking for something feminine and airy, opt for an empire waist or flowy midi.

If you’re going for a more professional look for your portrait session, try a blouson bodice dress. This works well for lawyers needing portraits for their brand. The silhouette is fitted and looks clean. You can even add a waist length blazer for variety during your portrait session.

Some good rule of thumbs when trying on dresses for your portrait session.

  1. Necklines. I see this often women trying to keep their neckline from falling to low, especially with V-neck dresses. Avoid this by making sure your dress does not go further than two inches from your collarbone.
  2. Hem lengths around the knee or longer will make you feel more comfortable. You won’t have to worry about bending and tugging so much at your dress.
  3. Avoid tight dresses or loose dresses.

The dress Amelia is wearing in this portrait session is a tiered maxi dress with a tie knot in the front giving it the wrap dress look. This is great for a flattering waist and showing off your curves.

I love the flowy sleeves for a feminine look.
