I photograph families with softness, with joy, and with space to just be. No forced smiles. No perfect poses. Just the golden, fleeting magic of your real life.
Hi there!
It’s August, your kids are splashing in the pool, and the last thing on your mind is fall family portraits. But here’s the thing, while you’re enjoying summer, my smartest clients are already securing their spot for those dreamy Houston fall family portraits with me. And there’s a really good reason why they don’t wait.
Last June, I had a sweet mom tell me she’d call back in September to book her family’s fall portraits with me. When she finally reached out in late September, I had to deliver the disappointing news: I was completely booked through November. She ended up booking with me on one of our weekday slots, which I prefer. The crowds are smaller, but of course, we had to make some adjustments to her schedule, like leaving work early and taking her kids out of school early. It was definitely worth it. Because although mom had to move her schedule around, she didn’t have to go with another photographer she did not know, and she still got her Christmas cards on time for the holidays. She didn’t have to find another photographer and settle for a rushed December session that didn’t turn out quite how she’d envisioned. That conversation reminded me why I always tell my clients: if you want to work with me for your Houston fall family portraits, we need to plan during the summer.
After 11 years of photographing families in Houston, I’ve learned that fall is absolutely magical here. While other parts of the country are dealing with unpredictable weather and bare trees, Houston’s fall season offers the most beautiful, comfortable conditions for family photography. The oppressive summer heat finally breaks, the light becomes golden and dreamy, and families can actually enjoy being outside together without melting!
But here’s what I’ve discovered: the families who get the most beautiful fall portraits, the best time slots, and the most relaxed experience are always the ones who book with me during the summer. As a mom of three boys myself, I understand how quickly time flies and how easy it is to let things slip to the bottom of your to-do list. But when it comes to Houston fall family portraits, waiting until you “feel ready” often means missing out entirely.
Let me share something that might surprise you: I typically limit myself to just a few family sessions per month during fall season. This isn’t because I don’t want to work with more families because I want to give each family the time, attention, and energy they deserve.
When I take on too many sessions, I’m rushed and mostly it’s my family that suffers. So I’ve learned to protect both my energy and my clients’ experience by keeping my fall schedule manageable.
What this means for Houston families is that my fall sessions typically book solid by mid-August. I’m talking about September, October, and November are completely full. The families who reach out in September are almost always going on a waitlist, hoping for a cancellation or they will have to get one of our weekday slots.
Last year, I squeezed in a few repeat clients who reached out at the very last minute. These are families I’ve worked with before, loyal clients who I adore, so I made some spots available for them because of our relationship. While the experience was still wonderful (I always try to make sure my clients get the best, no matter what!), I simply couldn’t do this for new families who were reaching out in September and October.
I’ve also heard heartbreaking stories from current clients about past mistakes they made with timing. One mom told me she didn’t book with me early enough one year and had to go with a different Houston photographer she didn’t know. The results weren’t what she had hoped for. The experience felt rushed, the photographer didn’t understand her family’s style, and the photos just didn’t capture her children the way she’d envisioned. You can bet that the next time around, she made sure to snag her session with me early in the summer!
The families who book early? They’re relaxed, excited, and get to choose from all my available time slots. They also get the benefit of my full attention during our consultation process, rather than feeling like just another session squeezed into an overpacked schedule.
Here’s another secret about Houston fall family portraits: not all time slots are created equal. Those gorgeous weekend morning sessions, typically Saturday and Sunday between 7 AM and 8 AM offer the most beautiful light and tend to work best for families with young children.
Kids are fresh and happy in the morning, the light is soft and dreamy, and we can take our time creating those natural, lifestyle images that families treasure forever. These premium time slots are always the first to go, usually booked by families who plan ahead in June and July.
When families wait until September to book, they often end up with weekday evening slots or those tricky weekend evening times that can be challenging with little ones. While I can still create beautiful images during these times, there’s something special about those calm Saturday morning sessions at Hermann Park or Buffalo Bayou Park when the world feels peaceful and unhurried.
Early booking also gives me the flexibility to reschedule if needed. Houston weather can be unpredictable even in fall, and families who book early have multiple backup date options. Last-minute bookers often have to take whatever date works, regardless of weather conditions or family circumstances.
I remember working with the Johnson family who booked their October session back in June. When their originally scheduled Saturday had unexpected rain, we easily moved to the following weekend. Compare that to families booking in September who might have just one available slot there’s no flexibility if life (or weather) happens.
Let’s talk about something I see every year: families who book Houston fall family portraits in November specifically for holiday cards, not realizing how this timing affects their final results.
When families book early in the season, September or October, I have plenty of time to carefully edit their images, make adjustments if needed, and ensure everything is perfect for their holiday card timeline. They receive their gallery with plenty of time to select their favorites, order prints, and even make changes if something isn’t quite right.
But families who book last-minute November sessions? They’re often stressed about tight holiday card deadlines, and I’m working under pressure to deliver images quickly rather than taking the time to make them truly beautiful. It’s not the relaxed, thoughtful process that leads to the most stunning results.
I want your Houston fall family portraits to be images you treasure for decades, not just something that gets the job done for this year’s holiday card. When we have time to plan and execute thoughtfully, the difference in quality is remarkable.
Your family deserves portraits that capture not just how you look, but how you feel together during this season of your lives. That kind of artistry takes time and intention, which is only possible when we’re not rushing to meet a holiday deadline.
Can we talk about the difference between planning your Houston fall family portraits in July versus September? In July, you’re relaxed, thinking ahead, and we can have leisurely conversations about your vision for the session. We can discuss outfit coordination without the pressure of back-to-school shopping. We can explore location options and maybe even scout spots together.
Come September, everything changes. Kids are adjusting to new school schedules, you’re juggling back-to-school chaos, and suddenly finding time for outfit planning and session coordination feels overwhelming. You’re making decisions quickly because you need photos ASAP, not because you’ve had time to thoughtfully consider what would work best for your family.
I love working with families who book early because they’re excited about the process, not stressed about logistics. They have time to ask questions, share their vision, and really think about what would make the session special for their family. This collaborative approach always results in more meaningful, personalized portraits.
One of my favorite client relationships started when a mom reached out in May about booking fall portraits. We spent the summer exchanging emails about her family’s style, their kids’ personalities, and what locations would work best. By the time October arrived, I felt like I already knew her family, and the session felt like spending time with old friends rather than working with new clients.
That’s the kind of experience I want for every family, relaxed, personal, and focused on creating something beautiful together rather than just checking another item off your to-do list.
The best Houston fall family portraits happen when you plan ahead, way ahead. While other families will be scrambling in September to find any photographer with availability, you’ll be relaxed knowing I’m reserved for your family, your perfect time slot is secured, and we can focus on creating something beautiful together. Your future self (and your holiday card recipients) will thank you for booking your Houston fall family portraits with me this summer.
After 11 years of watching this pattern repeat every fall season, I’ve learned that the families who get exactly what they want, the photographer they chose, the timing that works for their schedule, the relaxed experience they hoped for, are always the ones who plan ahead. They understand that great photography, like most good things in life, requires a little forethought.
What I’ve discovered is that families who book early aren’t just securing a spot on my calendar, they’re investing in peace of mind. They’re choosing to prioritize this important milestone instead of hoping it works out last-minute. And as someone who watches families grow and change through my lens, I can tell you that these moments with your children at these exact ages are never coming back.
My boys are growing so quickly that I sometimes look at photos from just a few months ago and am amazed at how much they’ve changed. This is why I’m passionate about helping Houston families secure their spot with me rather than settling for whoever happens to be available when they finally get around to booking.
The truth is, creating beautiful Houston fall family portraits is about so much more than just taking pictures. It’s about preserving this chapter of your family’s story when your children are exactly the ages they are right now, with all their current quirks and personalities and the way they interact with each other at this moment in time.
Don’t wait until the chaos of September to start thinking about your family’s fall portraits. The families who reach out now, while they’re relaxed and thinking ahead, always end up with the most beautiful experience and the images that become treasured family heirlooms.
